Why We Sing

Darkness can be scary. What’s the darkest place you have been in? Did you feel relief when the light was turned on? I know that I did. Darkness is disorienting and blinding. The imagination runs wild with all the possibilities of the unknown. But the light is revealing and brings truth.

Yesterday was the 500-year anniversary of the Reformation, a time where the Light of the Gospel was shed on the injustices of the day. The Catholic church had risen to prominence and power, yet forgot the very reasons it began. Instead of using its position to reach the poor and needy, it began to enslave them.

The powerful and exclusive ruling party kept the rest of the population in ignorance to what God’s Word really said. Luther had no idea that his act would spark the flame that became the Reformation, but he stepped forward to bring the Light to the darkness.

His act brought back the focus to the Word of God and the finished work of Christ for justification. The effects on the church today is countless, but one area that often goes untold is how the Reformation impacted the way we sing in our churches.

The Catholic church had outlawed congregational singing, and one of the key components of the Reformation was the restoration of singing to our services. So next time you are in church, sing with all your might for you are participating in the Worship of our God!
